Message to New Players (AND players who
didn't get a medical clearance in the spring):
New
players are always welcome. No experience is necessary. You
should come to school in the fall with a note from a doctor which says
you have medical clearance to play CONTACT sports. This is
important because the school will not CIPP register anyone who is not
medically cleared for contact sports.

Our home pitch is located at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode
Island.
Note that this is state/federal property.
No alcohol is permitted.
The fines are very stiff, and the referee just might be a Newport
Police Officer.
Directions to Fort Adams from Points South and West
Take
Interstate Route 95 North to Rhode Island. Take Exit 3 in Wyoming (yes,
that's the name of a real place in Rhode Island) and follow Route 138
East/North for approximately 15 miles until it intersects with US Route
1. Take a left onto US Route 1 North and follow Route 1 approximately 5
miles until there is a sign for Route 138 east. Follow Route 138 over
the Jamestown - Verrazanno Bridge and continue over the Newport Bridge
($2 toll). (You can see Fort Adams to your right as you are crossing
over the Newport Bridge.) Take first exit off of the bridge and take a
right onto Farewell Street at the end of the exit ramp. (There will be
a Citgo gas station on your right.) To Fort Adams proceed south on
Farewell Street approximately 1/4 mile to a fork in the road and take
the right hand fork onto America's Cup Avenue. Get in the right hand
lane. Proceed down America's Cup Avenue, you will pass the Marriott
Hotel and Newport's waterfront on your right, until you see a statue of
a wave with a pair of feet sticking out of it (We're not making this
up). Take a right onto Lower Thames Street. Proceed south on Thames
Street approximately 1/2 mile until you see a Shell Station on your
left and take a right onto Wellington Avenue. Follow Wellington Avenue
(the road will curve to the left after passing the Ida Lewis Yacht Club
on your right) to the next intersection and take a right. Follow the
road to the next intersection (once again, a curve to the left) and
take a right. Proceed approx.. 1/4 mile and look for two large black
anchors on your right. This is the entrance to Fort Adams State Park.
Take a right. Follow the road to the top of the hill. Continue straight
on the road past
the two soccer fields until you see the sign which reads: "Jay Kirwin Memorial
Rugby Pitch" on the left.
Directions to Fort Adams from Boston and Points North
Take Route 93(AKA, the Southeast
Expressway) South to Route 24. Take Route 24 South until it ends in
Portsmouth, RI (approximately 55 miles). Take Route 114 South (or Route
138 South if you wind up on it) to the intersection of Valley Road in
Middletown, Route 214. (From Route 114 there will be the Modern
Furniture Gallery on your left. From 138 there will be a Wendy’s and a
Shell Station on your left.) Take a left on Valley Road. Follow Valley
Road south about 2 miles until you are facing the Atlantic Beach Club.
Take a right onto Memorial Boulevard (Easton’s Beach, AKA, First Beach,
will be on your left). Proceed to the light at the intersection of
Bellevue Avenue and turn left. Proceed south on Bellevue until you see
the sign for Fort Adams and take a right onto Ruggles Avenue. Continue
following signs to Fort Adams, which will take you through 2 4-way
stops until the road dead ends at Brenton Road. Turn left (good sign
here to Fort Adams) and continue to 3-way stop and proceed to bottom of
hill to right turn at entrance to Fort Adams State Park. Follow the road to the
top of the hill. Continue straight on the road past the two soccer fields
until you see the sign which reads: "Jay Kirwin Memorial Rugby Pitch"
on the left.
Please help us protect our access to this field.
No alcohol whatsoever -
by fans or participants.

The SRA has been very supportive of the men's team, donating nearly
$1000 towards camp scholarships and the purchase of a scrum machine.
Women's Program Status:
As you may know, Amanda Grearson
and Gabby Magowan have started the process for fielding a women's team
at the University. With the school's permission to train, they
had at least 38 different players come out to 3 practice sessions in
early May
- with no games scheduled!!! That certainly demonstrates a
student
commitment to the sport.
SALVE APPROVAL:
As things stand right now, the school has not officially recognized
women's rugby as a sport. However, the school has indicated that
they
will move forward with recognition once the group leaders have obtained
medical clearances for 18 or so players.
NERFU APPROVAL:
In the interim, the women's club
has decided to form themselves as a U23 women's team, called Ruggles
U23 WRFC. This permits them to seek a league season against other
college programs in Division IV from NERFU for the
fall, while respecting Salve's request that the team refrain from using
the name "Salve Regina" until they are officially recognized.
(This
arrangement is similar to that used by Quinnipiac University Men's
Rugby - they are known as New Haven U23). Once the team is
officially
recognized by the school, the team name can be changed to Salve Regina
University WRFC. The NERFU New Club Application is pending.
USA RUGBY APPROVAL/CIPP
REGISTRATION
On or after August 1, women's
players will be able to register themselves with the team (Ruggles U23
WRFC) through USA Rugby. This is liability (not health)
insurance, and
it is mandatory. The first year cost is approximately $35.00 per
player, but
after the school approves the team, the University will probably handle
that expense themselves. Note that the guys paid their first year
CIPP
dues too.
JERSEYS/UNIFORM:
The SRU Men's Team has
voted to
loan a set of white jerseys to the Women's program. As this is
the
biggest expense facing a brand new club ($800-1200), it should help to
get the program
focused more on training, and less on fundraising (But fundraising will
still be important!!!). The team needs to select shorts (kiwi or
traditional AND white or royal?) and socks colors (white/royal AND
hoops, stripe or solid). This will probably be a player expense
for
the first year. (approx $35 total).
OTHER ISSUES:
The team should meet on or about September 2, 2008 to give interested
players a
status report, and to identify short term and long term goals.
COACH:
The team has spoken to several potential candidates. The need for
a coach cannot be overstated. For at least the first semester,
the coach may not be compensated.
CONCLUSION
So, in order to have a women's
team for the NERFU season beginning on or about September 20th, the
program needs
at least 20 medical clearances, plus 20 CIPP registered players.
Stay tuned for more information.
